Once upon a time, a BlackBerry was the only smartphone to be seen with. Nowadays, Apple iPhones and Samsung Galaxy devices line the pockets of most in the Western world.

Hardware keyboards, push email and that blinking red LED bring back doe-eyed memories of the mid-2000s, but these days you’d be hard-pressed to find an old-style BlackBerry on sale anywhere, let alone in the hands of someone on the bus.

BlackBerry’s slow decline was largely down to the brand’s inability to adapt to the launch of the iPhone in 2007, so consequently, developers left the platform to build apps for the touchscreens of iOS and then Android, which is where BlackBerry itself eventually ended up, with all of the most recent BlackBerry devices running on Google’s mobile.

In early 2020, TCL announced that it would no longer manufacture new BlackBerry phones, though said that it would continue to provide support (including customer service and warranties) for existing phones until 31 August 2022, while support for BlackBerry OS, BlackBerry 10 and BlackBerry PlayBook OS ended on 4 January 2022, rendering older devices inoperable.

For a time after this, there was a fresh glimmer of hope that BlackBerry wasn’t dead; with a Texas-based startup called OnwardMobility picking up the license to make BlackBerry-branded phones and promising at least one new BlackBerry ( complete with a physical keyboard and 5G) in the near future.

That was until BlackBerry (the company) cancelled OnwardMobility’s license out of the blue, in early 2022 – the final straw in the startup’s troubled efforts to get its debut smartphone off the ground.

OnwardMobility subsequently announced its closure on 21 February 2022 (see below), thanking fans for their support and explaining that the decision to close without releasing a single product had not been made lightly.

With all this in mind, even though below is a rundown of the most viable BlackBerry devices to pick up right now (based on our reviews), you really should abstain from buying one; unless it’s simply with the intent of owning a piece of mobile history.

The best BlackBerry phones for 2022

1. BlackBerry Key2

Best Prices Today: $1,099.99 at Amazon

The Key2 has excellent build quality, thoughtful software additions and a keyboard that purists will adore. But in the smartphone market, that doesn’t make it a viable choice for most people.

Typing on a physical keyboard this small is difficult no matter what any enthusiast says, and the form factor is harder to hold than the smaller BlackBerry Bolds of a decade ago.

Battery life is above average and it runs much faster than the KeyOne, but the BlackBerry Key2 is very much a phone for a select few people who still must have a keyboard – and no one else.

2. BlackBerry Key2 LE

The Key LE is, predictably, not as good as the Key2. It is noticeably slower and we missed the capacitive keyboard more than we thought we might.

But it’s a lot less, and it ran better when we disabled the BlackBerry Hub. If you’re a light phone user and must have a physical keyboard on your phone then it’s the cheapest way to get into the game.

BlackBerry’s software is also secure and useful. You should view the Key2 LE as an acceptable mid-range phone.

3. BlackBerry KEYone

When it launched, the KEYone was the best BlackBerry phone for years. It (finally) successfully melded classic BlackBerry design with the necessary mix of Android and nostalgia, without going overboard.

However, if you love your iPhone or Samsung, you’ll hate the KEYone and shouldn’t even consider buying it.

4. BlacKBerry DTEK60

At launch, for the first time in a while, the DTEK60 was a BlackBerry we could recommend to the individual consumer. It’s also a business device, but the flexibility of Android means it is versatile enough to be moulded to the needs of both. It marries the Android operating system with robust, easy to use security features and slick design without breaking the bank.

TCL’s subsequent abandonment of its license to produce BlackBerry devices and no promise of support past August 2022 makes even this great ‘Berry hard to recommend in 2022.

5. BlackBerry Motion

The BlackBerry Motion proves a difficult device to rate. It’s too big, and there’s not much to tempt a casual smartphone buyer here aside from outstanding battery life. It is too austere and clunky even in comparison to the KeyOne; not to mention it arrived overpriced – a hangover from the premium leanings of the BlackBerry name.

BlackBerry isn’t a cool brand, but the Motion has a huge battery, a headphone jack and a CPU that will just about cope with what you want it to do besides high-level gaming. If the KeyOne was a comeback, the Motion is just about a solid sequel but there are other newer phones with better specs for half the price.

Nissan Pulsar (2015) car review

Nissan Pulsar: first, the good points

The wheelbase of the Barcelona-built Pulsar, at 2.7 metres, is the longest in its class, no doubt helping the supple ride quality, and rear legroom (all 692mm of it) at least matches a Skoda Superb, and might even better it.

The Pulsar also has – and be prepared to fall on them faint with amazement – the widest front door armrests in the sector. Spanning 95mm across their softly bolstered width, such cosseting homes for elbows are not usually seen outside the luxury sector, Nissan reckons. And there’s more. How about a self-cleaning reversing camera? It can choose to clean itself with a jet of water, or air, or both. Whichever suits!

And the worst bits of the Nissan Pulsar. This may take some time...

The story then takes a turn for the worse. It exudes the character of a car built with all the bits Nissan didn’t want for the stuff it gets excited about. 

 

Quite where some of the plastics in the cabin were introduced to each other I have no idea. But it must have been dark, for as an example of the lack of bother about finish, a shiny, hard half of the transmission tunnel butts up against a more plusher, softer section, while on every car we tried the gap between dash and door on the passenger side was twice the width of the driver’s side.

Oddly, the passenger seems to sit a couple of inches higher than the driver as well, although perhaps a slump-shouldered ennui had set in behind the wheel and accentuated this impression.

That’s because it handles with little vim, the steering wheel and the suspension it is linked to performing the perfunctory role of moving the scenery about before your eyes.

Nissan Pulsar review: not the sharpest tool in the box

Nissan has, probably correctly, decided that the Pulsar’s owners will not be dreaming of being the next Lewis Hamilton. Piercing this rather dull experience is a crash detection system that screams in panic at the presence of almost every nearby object. So perhaps they are worried about being the next Nico Rosberg.

It does looks okay though, like a not quite fully formed Qashqai, but to turn a well-worn adage on its head, is better in the pictures than in the metal while the carbonfibre-effect rear diffuser, a pointless affectation on most cars, is exceptionally pointless on this one.

Verdict

So for customers wanting something less pokey than a Juke, not as big as a Qashqai, not as fun to drive as a Focus, or as stylish as a Golf, but better than an Almera, the Pulsar is most definitely for them. But, CAR reader, it is not for you.
